Application for a new 2LD - parliament.nz Submission From: M.J. Hudson Received: 24 March 2005 This is a written (electronic) submission that the application for the creation of a new second level domain (2LD) constituting 'parliament.nz' be rejected. The grounds for this submission are the following (some points may refer directly to the applicant's application document): 1. It would be generally agreed that while Parliament (Parliament Services et.al.) sees itself as a separate agency, it is still intrinsically part of the greater government structure. 2. The addition of this 2LD would only cause confusion rather than clarification in the public domain, undermining existing government divisions and agencies that have invested heavily in this area of IT. 3. The creation of this 2LD will not achieve anything more than would the registration of the word 'parliament' as part of the .govt 2LD (further segregation could occur through sub domains), and unless the writer is mistaken, the number of domain names that would be registered under this 2LD would be extremely small - adding no benefit to the overall NZ 2LD space. 4. The existing 'govt' 2LD already has moderation mechanisms in place 'to prevent its use by organisations or individuals that would seek to masquerade as non executive government organisations.' inclusive of executive government organisations.
