New domain name registry commissioned
The shift to a new system for the registration of domain names was successfully completed over the weekend.
The implementation of the Shared Registry System (SRS) introduces several changes including responsibility for running of the Register (the record of .nz domain names) passing from Domainz to '.nz' Registry Services.
Expressions of interest are being actively sought from organisations wishing to become authorised Registrars on the SRS. From 7 December any authorised Registrars will have direct access to the Register, a function that currently only Domainz can undertake in its role as Stabilising Registrar.
When discussing the changes, Domain Name Commissioner, Ms Debbie Monahan, stated, "The new '.nz' SRS environment is expected to be more open, equitable and competitive than the old system".
She continued by saying "We want to reassure people that the introduction of SRS will have no impact on their use of domain names for email and websites, nor are any currently held registrations compromised. As the settling-in process continues we shall be keeping everyone well informed of developments."
